USA: 2nd woman indicted on terrorism charges in the case "JihadJane"
WASHINGTON - A second American woman has been indicted on terrorism charges in the case "JihadJane", having surrendered to the American judicial authorities, said the Ministry of Justice on Friday.
- The new suspect, Jamie Paulin Ramirez, 31, has been indicted for acts of terrorism in the same case that her friend, "JihadJane," the ministry said in a statement Friday.
"JihadJane", whose real name is Colleen LaRose, 46, was already indicted for planning to murder abroad, providing material support to terrorists, false statements to police and identity theft.
The ministry said the two women travelled together in Europe to "participate" in activities related to jihad.
Jamie Paulin Ramirez went to the Philadelphia police (eastern USA) after her return from Europe. She faces up to 15 years in prison and 250,000 dollars in fines.
She was arrested in Ireland last month, according to press reports, on charges of murdering a draft Swedish cartoonist who has caricatured the prophet Muhammad (PBUH), before being released without prosecution.
"JihadJane", appeared for the first time on March 18 before a Philadelphia court and pleaded not guilty.
The U.S. authorities had announced her arrest on March 9 in a village in the Philadelphia area. They suspect that the terrorists recruited in Europe and Asia, and conspiracy to kill a man in Sweden.
The charge refers to email that a South Asia correspondent called "JihadJane" to travel to Sweden and kill someone "in a way that will frighten the world of unbelievers."
In one of her shipments from the Pennsylvania town where nobody suspected anything, Colleen LaRose said she wanted to become a martyr and explained that she could benefit from her appearance to "blend into the landscape".
America is concerned about the growing problem of Islamic extremism on its own soil, involving American citizens or permanent residents.
