Global Warming: An alarming situation
The greenhouse gases accumulate faster than expected in the Earth's atmosphere increasing the danger of irreversible climate change by the end of the century, unless aggressive measures are taken, warned Saturday a leading experts on the subject.
- "The measurements show that emissions of greenhouse gases are accelerating faster than we thought," said Chris Field, of Carnegie Institution and a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United Nations (IPCC).
"During the last decade, developing countries like China and India have increased their capacity to produce electricity by burning more coal," he said.
Hence "the economies of the developing world continue to release more carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere and we are now in a new situation on the evolution of climate change", said this Climatologist in a presentation at the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting in Chicago (Illinois, North) since Thursday.
"This will impact most likely much worse than predicted in the 4th IPCC report," he warned.
New studies also show the potentially dangerous effects in the climate system that could convert areas to absorb CO2 source of this powerful greenhouse gas, also noted Chris Field.
He especially mentioned the destruction of the rainforest that holds vast amounts of CO2 in its vegetation and high humidity which makes it possible to resist fire.
But the warming climate and the changes in distribution of precipitation on the Earth threat of dry tropical forests, exposing them to fire.
Researchers estimate that the loss of forest in particular because of fires during this century could increase the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere to 100 parts per million (ppm) above the current 386 ppm and with potentially devastating consequences for the Earth's climate.
The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
