Lebanon: arrest of person suspected of spying for Israel
A person suspected of spying for Israel has been arrested in Nabatiyeh (south of Lebanon), announced Tuesday to AFP a spokesman of the Lebanese army.
- "The suspect was arrested during this month and submitted to questioning but no charges have yet been brought against him," said the spokesman in anonymity.
According to a safety officer, the army conducted a search Monday at the home of the suspect identified as Marwan F." and the gas station he owns in Nabatiyeh (75 km south of Beirut).
Also according to this source, the military investigation could lead to other arrests.
The local press believes that the suspect worked for the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence services, who have recruited him in France in the 1990s.
According to the daily Al Akhbar, he was responsible for collecting information on the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah.
This is not the first time that charges of spying for Israel are made in Lebanon. The defendants face the death penalty.
