Arrest of 17 suspected members of a Turkish cell of Al Qaeda
ANKARA - Turkish police arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday 17 suspected members of Al Qaeda cells in Turkey, during an operation in several regions against al Qaeda, reported the Anatolia news agency.
- The arrests by anti-terror police began Tuesday in Konya province, a stronghold of Islamist in central Turkey, and spread to three neighboring provinces, the agency said.
- Turkish police regularly carry out arrests in the inner circles of al Qaeda in Turkey.
In January, about 120 people were arrested during a wide dragnet through Turkey against Al Qaeda.
A Turkish cell of Al Qaeda has been held by the Turkish authorities responsible for bombings in Istanbul in November 2003 against two synagogues, the British consulate and British bank HSBC, which had caused 63 deaths, including the British consul.
