Moscow, invaded by the smoke, barely breaths

MOSCOW - The Russian capital barely breaths on Saturday morning, invaded by the choking smoke from forest fires, while the temperature approaches 40 degrees.
- At 7:00 am local time (03:00 GMT), few passersby hurrying to the subway, which was not, either, free of smoke.
- Many people wore face masks whose sales have exploded in recent days. Others covered their faces with handkerchiefs.
- "Because of the heat and smoke, Moscow has turned into a hellish volcano spewing out tons of hazardous substances on people, alarmed the tabloid Tvoya Den.
- On Friday, the concentration of carbon monoxide was four times higher than the alert thresholds, according to the local observatory of air quality.
- Saturday morning, the smell of burning was still as strong as the day before and the smoke irritated eyes.
- Visibility on the highways in central Moscow was reduced to 100 meters, according to the Interfax news agency.
- The airports of Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo functioned normally, while some flights from Vnukovo Airport were delayed, according to their respective sites.
- The summer 2010 will break all records for heat in Moscow since the opening of temperature records 130 years ago. A historical maximum was reached last week with 38.2 degrees in the capital.
- Tens of thousands of firefighters, soldiers and rescue workers continue to fight against the wildfires raging across thousands of hectares in the western part of the country and have so far killed 52 people.
