The leaders of the intelligence services of the five member countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) - Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia - met Monday and Tuesday in Nouakchott, said the Mauritanian Information Agency (MIA, official).

  •     The MIA, which did not specify the topics of the meeting, said that these officials met Monday evening General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, head of the junta that took power in Mauritania in a coup d’Etat in August.

According to security sources, the objectives of this meeting are to achieve "security agreements between the countries of the UMA concerned about the development of insecurity in the region" facing drug trafficking and weapons and illegal immigration into Europe.

The meeting is also devoted to the activities of the Islamic terrorist movement, particularly in the desert on the border between Mauritania, Mali and Algeria, according to the same sources.

The duration of this meeting has not been specified.
