The chief diplomat of the European Union Javier Solana began a visit Friday in the Ghaza strip, unprecedented in the Palestinian territory since the seizure of power by Hamas in June 2007, according the press.

  •     "I came to see myself the situation and the destruction and show my solidarity with the people of Ghaza who have suffered so much," said Solana to the press.

Mr. Solana has seen a part of the damage caused by the Israeli offensive in Ghaza between December 27 and January 18 and met with representatives of "civil society" and businessmen, according to his staff.

He visited the town of Ezzbet Abedrabbo in northern band of Ghaza, devastated in the offensive, and the site of a school destroyed by an Israeli raid in the same area.

No meeting was held with representatives of Hamas, who are considered a terrorist organization by the EU.

Mr. Solana also visited the UNRWA, the main aid agency of the United Nations in Ghaza damaged by Israeli shells during the war.

His visit comes before an international conference on rebuilding Ghaza expected Monday in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.

In this context, the head of Norwegian diplomacy Jonas Gahr Stoere, whose country chairs the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC) of donors to the Palestinians, has also arrived at Ghaza Friday.

Mr. Stoere came to "get informed on the ground" of the destruction caused during the war launched by Israel which caused 1330 Palestinians dead, told the press Haakon Svane.

The Norwegian minister met separately Thursday with the head of the outgoing Israeli government Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Hamas and Fatah, the party of President Mahmoud Abbas dislodged by the Islamists of Ghaza, began Thursday a process of reconciliation in Cairo, agreeing to form a government of national consensus before the end of March which will oversee Reconstruction Ghaza.
