A man of 43, U.S. national of Algerian origin, was arrested in Barcelona for "alleged financing of al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)," announced Wednesday Spanish police in a statement.

  •    The man, Mohamed Omar Debhi, is suspected of having "sent money to Algeria where it was handed over to the Sahel AQIM cells," the statement said.

The money totaling "more than 60,000 euros" had been sent by transfer or by
  • "human post" to Toufik Mizi, an Algerian who is wanted by Spanish courts since 2006 for "belonging to a terrorist organization," according to the same statement.
  •   Omar Debhi, a resident of Esplugues de Llobregat, a town near Barcelona (northeast), who knew Toufik Mizi since 2003, was charged with laundering money and sending some "in Algeria for the cells of AQIM" to enable them to buy equipment, the statement said.
  •    Organization involved in the African Sahel region, AQIM claimed responsibility last week's kidnapping of five French and two Africans, captured in mid-September and probably detained in Niger in northern Mali.
