A member of the Spanish secret services, based in Nador (Northern Morocco), has left the country at the request of Moroccan authorities said Sunday the daily El Pais.

  •     This person, whose name is not specified, is suspected by Rabat of having financed the activities of a Moroccan militant of human rights jailed recently, Chakib al Khayari, said the newspaper.

Mr. al Khayari, who heads in Nador the Association Rif of Human Rights, was arrested in February in the wake of criticisms against the action he considered insufficient by the Moroccan authorities against drug trafficking, according to El Pais.

He was also accused of having received money from abroad to conduct a media campaign to discredit the efforts of the Moroccan authorities, against the traffic.

El Pais states that an authorized source of the Spanish National Intelligence Centre (CNI, services) has denied any payment of money to the Moroccan militant.

According to the newspaper, the hasty departure of the official Spanish positioned in Nador, in response to a Moroccan requirement, “is equivalent to an expulsion.”

Questioned in Rabat, a source close to the ongoing investigation said it had no comment to make.

Over one hundred people suspected of trafficking hashish at the start of the Rif have been arrested since the beginning of the year in Morocco, but El Khayari said the real sponsors of this traffic would not be worried, said El Pais.
