Greece: 41 Harraga in a truck
ATHENS - Greek police announced Monday it had arrested 41 Harraga (illegal migrants), including twenty children, hidden in a truck near the town of Messolonghi (west), intending to enter Italy via the port of Patras.
- Immigrants, most of whom were Palestinians, Algerians and Afghans according to their statements, told police they had paid 3,000 euros each to enter Italy.
- Police also arrested the truck driver and the driver of a car, suspected of monitoring the road against a possible police control.
- The port of Patras, linking Greece with Italy is a transit point for migrants to Western Europe.
- Facing a wave of immigration, Greece was forced by its European partners to prevent migrants moving to other EU countries.
