GENEVA- At least 26 children have died the past two months in Yemen, a prey to a popular uprising, according to a statement from the Global Fund (Unicef) on Tuesday.

  •    "Apart from Libya, of which we do not have complete figures, Yemen has the largest number of children killed or injured because of political unrest in the region," said a spokeswoman for Unicef, Marix Mercado, during a press briefing.
  •    She explained that "between February 18 and April 18, at least 26 children were killed, most by bullets and live ammunition."
  •    At least 36 children were also wounded by live ammunition, according to the UN agency.
  •    Forty-seven others were victims of physical violence at unprecedented protests demanding the immediate departure of head of state Ali Abdallah Saleh, who presides over the destinies of Yemen for 32 years.
  •    In addition, some 763 children were exposed to tear gas, according to Unicef.
  •    Violent protest of the regime has caused more than 125 deaths since the protests began in late January.
