NOUAKCHOTT - Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has denied any involvement in the fatal attack April 28 in Marrakech in Morocco, in a statement issued by a Mauritanian private information online agency, Nouakchott Information Agency (ANI).

  •    In this text, dated Friday and published in Arabic, AQIM recalls the attack that killed 17 people, including 8 French and then the information released by the Moroccan authorities describing the main suspect as "an admirer of Al-Qaeda."
  •    "We deny any connection with the explosion and say no way being involved in this operation," says the regional branch of the Islamist network in a statement that could not be immediately authenticated.
  •    However, ANI has regularly published in the past releases or statements from members of AQIM and has never been disproved.
  •    "We affirm that, despite the fact that among our priorities are strikes against Jews and Crusaders (the West, ed), and against their interests, we decide when and where so that this would not conflict with the interests of the nation (Muslims) and its action towards the goal of its liberation," adds AQIM.
  •    Immediately after the attack, which was not claimed, the Moroccan authorities had assured that its modus operandi resembled that adopted by Al-Qaeda.
  •    Moroccan police on Thursday arrested three Moroccans, one is considered the prime suspect and, according to the Moroccan Interior Minister Taieb Cherkaoui, he is "an admirer of Al-Qaeda."
