The head of the Italian government Silvio Berlusconi was elected Sunday to lead the new party of the People of Freedom (PDL) at the founding congress of the right formation, which aims to win the vote of an Italian of two.
- I hope to succeed, I will never disappoint you,” said the ‘Cavaliere’ in a speech immediately after the proclamation of the election by some 6,000 delegates gathered in Rome who voted by show of hands.
Friday, Silvio Berlusconi has set a target of 51% of votes in the new formation, the first day of Congress of PDL, merging the Cavaliere party, Forza Italia (FI), and National Alliance (AN, Conservative ) of the current President of the Chamber of Deputies Gianfranco Fini.
The founding congress of the PDL takes place fifteen years after the first victory of the right led by Silvio Berlusconi, who made his entry into politics a few months earlier.
It takes place two months before the European elections in June when the Italian right is counting on a new defeat for the left, having won the Legislatives in April 2008 which saw the return of Cavaliere (aged 72).
