A French who lives in northern Mali since 2006, converted to Islam, refused Saturday to leave the country despite the security measures taken by France after the kidnappings occurred in that region.

- The French, a Muslim married to a Muslim Malia woman, is now named Ibrahim Kanga. He said he refuses to leave the north of Mali which he considers his country. "My life is here and not elsewhere," he said before adding that he felt good about this country and that he was safe.
- Ibrahim lives in northern Mali since 2006 and participated in the creation of a boarding school for poor children.
- Following the latest kidnappings, including two French, Paris advises its citizens not to travel there. Late November, two French were abducted in Hombori, in northern Mali, followed by the kidnapping of three European tourists, including a German who was killed in Timbuktu by armed men.
- In his will, Ibrahim Kanga asked never to pay ransom if he was kidnapped.
