  • At least eighty Harragas (candidates for illegal emigration), on aboard two boats, were rescued from a shipwreck Monday by the Italian Coast Guard off the coast of Calabria.
  • The harragas, whose nationality was not revealed, were aboard two old boats more than 60 nautical miles from the Italian coast and were evacuated despite the bad weather on a boat the Coast Guard.
  • In addition, some forty Somali harragas aboard a dinghy, coming from the Libyan coast, have launched a distress call by satellite phone, according to UNHCR in Calabria who requested that every effort is made to save the lives of these people.
  • Shipwrecks of boats overloaded with Harragas are frequent in the Mediterranean, mainly with the war in Libya and unrest in Tunisia. They try to reach the island of Lampedusa in Italy.
