In an interview with U.S. television network ABC News, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has completely denied giving the order to fire on demonstrators in his country. Only a fool would do such a thing, he said on television.

In addition, Assad has questioned the results of the UN, according to whom 4,000 people have died since the start of popular uprising. He said the majority of victims were supporters of the regime, not the reverse. Assad played down the impact of sanctions against his country, saying that it was not something new.
