France: First World grafting of hands and face
French surgeons have made Saturday night a transplant of part of the face and both hands above the wrist of a man of 30 years, at the Henri Mondor hospital in Créteil, in the suburbs of Paris.
- The intervention, which involved 40 people and lasted nearly 30 hours, was conducted on a man of 30, severely burned in an accident in 2004, said the release of the Paris hospitals.
This is the sixth of the face transplant in the world, but from the first transplant of both the face and hands on the same patient.
The operation was performed to the face by the team of Professor Laurent Lantieri and Dr. Jean-Paul Meningaud (Henri Mondor), and hands by the team of Dr. Christian Dumontier (Hôpital Saint-Antoine).
The team of Professor Lantieri has made ten days ago a face transplant in a man aged 28, also at the Henri Mondor hospital in Créteil.
