South Africa: Two suspected cases of influenza, the first on the continent
Health authorities in South Africa are studying two cases of suspected swine flu, the first reported in Africa, found in people returning from Mexico, announced Thursday the Ministry of Health.
- “There are two cases, but they are not confirmed,” said the spokesman of the ministry, Fidel Hadebe, stating that the National Institute for Communicable Diseases was informed of the matter.
One case was detected in the province of Western Cape (southwest) where the city of Cape Town, one in Gauteng (center), where Johannesburg is located, he added.
These are the first suspected cases of swine flu reported in South Africa but also throughout the African continent.
