Sheraton: A Swedish citizen suspected of swine influenza

The hospital of Oran lived yesterday morning a state of maximum alert at the level of the service of infection when a case presented symptoms suspected to be those of swine influenza.

  • The patient, a Swedish citizen, aged forty, and working in the hydrocarbons sector in Sonatrach. According to reports, the Swedish has been moved from the Sheraton hotel, where symptoms similar to those of swine influenza have appeared on him.

    The hotel management told the medical board at the health direction of Oran who had applied for the emergency transport service of infectious diseases at the University Hospital (CHU) taking all necessary measures, isolation of patients and control of the tenants of the hotel.

  • Upon arrival of the patient to the hospital, a team of experts examined him and made the necessary analysis. The patient was found to be suffering from meningitis, and necessary care was provided. Meanwhile, the information had spread to the various hospital departments.

    Ennahar moved on site to investigate the situation but also to seek the preparations at the management level of health, but it was impossible because the managers were in a meeting. In addition, the director of infectious diseases has declined to make statements without prior permission from the Director of the hospital who was not in his office. Specialists and staff had to cope with this case we have been told that he had been suspected at the Sheraton Hotel, waiting for his return to his country (Sweden).

    Contacted by telephone, Dr. Belarbi, responsible for prevention at the Health Board of Oran, has confirmed the registration of a suspected case; a Swedish citizen, but has denied the registration of cases of the virus of swine influenza.

    Hotels that receive foreigners or people from European countries where the virus has spread have started taking the necessary measures of control. A special medical team is at ‘Es-sania airport’ to check passengers from different countries.

    For its part, the port of Oran adopted its plan to be implemented this morning, coinciding with the arrival of a ship from Spain with five hundred passengers and 120 vehicles. The port has acquired, for a first stage, a thousand mask and gloves for the police officer, customs officers and officers of control, in addition to disinfection of the port after each arrival or departure of vessels to avoid contamination.
