Betrouni Omar: We do not deserve going to the World cup
"We do not have a national selection for the World cup. The National team is too big for Saâdane" "The qualification for the African Cup would be too much for us. Ziani is the only player valid"
- We did not expect, at this interview, such a sincerity and audacity from Betrouni Omar, the former football star of Algeria. He said loud and clear that the qualification of the greens for the World Cup in South Africa would be a miracle. He added that we do not have a National team capable of such an achievement. More than that, he admits that even the African Cup would be too much for us. Betrouni casts doubt on the capacity of the national coach Rabah Saadane, whom he held that the greens are larger than its capacity.
How do you evaluate, as a former MCA player, the results of the team only two days from the end of the season?
The results of the Mouloudia this season, even if they were not positive, or rather say, were not up to the level, MCA deserves to play every season for the titles, either national or international, this season was better than the former ones. The team was always in danger of relegation but escapes just in the last days. This season, the MCA has not only ensured its aims but maintains for the Arab competition next season despite its limited opportunities after a void recently imposed by the USM Blida to Bologhine.
According to you then, this season has been successful for the MCA and the President Amrous has succeeded in his mission?
It is successful in comparison with the failures of the club in previous seasons for the title or the cup of Algeria. But as regards the second part of your question, I would like to emphasize that Amrous succeeded after leading the club to achieve the current results, although the Mouloudia deserves to play the leading roles each season.
What are the reasons behind the difficulties encountered by the team each season?
The reasons are known by everybody, whether by the fans of the team at the national level, or by those who follow the club. Because of the rot that exists and which has caused problems to the team, which had a negative effect on the composition and the performance and the repetition of the scenario every season.
Why, according to you?
Because in Mouloudia, the president is not elected legally. Everyone knows how the president is elected in Mouloudia in recent years. The president is elected in an illegal manner, if he tries to deviate from the line drawn by those who have propelled him to the head of the club, he will be excluded from his post and the same people who elected him would return against him. We have seen this kind of behaviour since 2000, and the MCA has become prisoner of the person who does whatever he wants, as if the MCA is his personal property and not a national heritage for all Algerians.
Who do you speak about?
I think he is widely known. This is the so-called ‘Strong man’ of Mouloudia, Algeria's ambassador in Italy, Rachid Méiref. This is evidence that he controls things within the club. It is a shame if things continue on this way.
You, as former players of the MCA, why didn’t you try to stop this masquerade.
Allah Ghaleb! (Alas, we can’t), they have excluded us from by force. There have been many initiatives from our part as former players of Mouloudia with the aim of rehabilitating this great club, but these initiatives have been aborted because of the infiltration of these parties in the body of the club and at a greater degree, Rachid Méiref.
Let us talk about the National team and the match against Egypt. How do you see this match, concerning our national team?
The meeting will obviously not be easy, either for our national team or for the Egyptian team, but we must not lose the points of this meeting. We have the advantage of the field and the public. Egyptians will not come to Algeria to a void; they will try to leave with the points of the match. As an Algerian, I ask the national coach to focus on the psychological aspect that will be decisive.
Furthermore, I am against this new mode to make training camps abroad. The leaders would make the course of preparation in Algeria at the place where the match will be played.
Honestly, do you think we have a National team capable of realizing the dream of all Algerians in qualifying for the World cup?
I would have liked, as an Algerian, to laugh at myself and say that we are capable. The level of the World Cup is very high and the reality of our selection is quite the opposite. In all honesty and objectivity, we do not have a national team capable of reaching the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Our qualification for the African Cup would be a great achievement and would be ‘too much’ for us at this time.
What are the current players of National team you prefer?
Except for the player of the O. Marseille, Karim Ziani, the other footballers are not suitable and do not deserve to wear the national colours. What bothers me the most among players of the national team is that they only think about money at the expense of the honour of wearing the national colours. This is, of course, not true of all players.
