  • All means are good, and everything that floats on the water can be used by the Algerian Harraga to reach the European coasts. The example of the fisherman who uses his boat to organize ‘harga’ (illegal emigration) to Spain is instructive. The latter has benefited from the fishing boat under the state support through the National Agency for support to the employment of young people (ANSEJ) for the activity of fishing, but it seems that he preferred use it in illegal transportation of youth; boys and girls to Spain.

This happened the day before yesterday when the owner has agreed with 33 Harraga, among them two young girls, to take them to Spain. The start was on regular boats from Cape Falcon in Ain Turk, while the young investor leaved the fishing port of Oran at 1 am. The meeting place was the region off Paloma. The candidates for illegal emigration went up on the fishing boat of six meters.

The boat stopped due to engine failure. Some Harraga, in panic, called their families on the phone who, in their turn, informed the coastguard. The latter found, around six o'clock in the morning, 15 miles west of Oran, the 33 Harraga who were aged 18 to 45, in a difficult situation.

Ennahar accompanied the Coast Guard team that had gone on three warships to bring the Harraga to the port of Oran. Among the group of Harraga, two young girls, one having university degree, aged 26, who wanted to try an adventure in Europe. The Harragates have refused to talk to us. A young man told us he was tired of "Högra" (injustice) practised by officials of the Sheraton. He worked as a chef but did not receive his pay, so he decided to leave with friends from Oran.

The Raïs of the boat, ones arrested, pretended he wanted to rescue the the Harraga and that  he had no connection with them. Ennahar has seen the documents and the permit of the shiping boat. A  report was prepared before presentation in court.

It was found that the Harraga turned to owners of fishing ports in Oran to emigrate illegaly to Europe. That is what Ennahar discovered after discussions with the families of Harraga. it is time that the authorities react to this new phenomenon.
