63 injured including 23 policemen in in Algiers
Sixty-three people, including 23 policemen, were injured Friday as a result of violence by "troublemakers" during the event held in Algiers in support of Palestinians in Gaza, said the interior minister.
- Several thousand people took part Friday in Algiers and other cities, such as Oran (West), in marches against the Israeli offensive.
"In Algiers, these demonstrations have been infiltrated by troublemakers, who have committed acts of violence including stone-throwing causing injuries to 23 policemen and 40 people among them two journalists," said the ministry release quoted by the agency APS.
Shops were looted and cars vandalized as well as windows and furniture, causing an atmosphere of panic among the inhabitants which led to the intervention of security forces, who carried out the arrest of perpetrators of these acts, "according to the text.
The ministry said that the demonstrations in the capital are banned, but stressed that several other events on the same day in other cities, in solidarity with the Palestinians, were held in peace.
