- The ministers' council has decided to make Friday and Saturday days off weekly from August 14, instead of Thursday and Friday, according to an official statement issued Tuesday evening.
"The Council of Ministers decided that the weekly rest will be held Friday and Saturday," said the statement, quoted by the news agency APS.
"These new provisions will come into force from Friday 14 August," said the text published at the end of the meeting chaired by the Head of State Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The weekly rest period is set from 1976 on Thursday and Friday in Algeria, a country where the entire population is Muslim and where Islam is the state religion. Previously, it was observed Saturday and Sunday.
The law enacted under the presidency of Houari Boumedienne (1965-1978), is still strictly enforced by the administration and most of the public companies.
But it was bypassed by the banks, who were the first to establish the Joint weekend Friday and Saturday.
