Ghaza: 1145 martyrs, including 355 children, and more than 5160 injured
Recall of the events since the start of the Zionist offensive in 27 December in Ghaza:
- DECEMBER 2008
- 27: Israel launches an air offensive against the Ghaza strip whose aim is to stop firing rockets from the Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas (Operation hardened Lead).
- The exiled leader of Hamas Khaled Machaal called for a third intifada.
- At least 230 Palestinians are killed, mostly Hamas policemen (Palestinian hospital sources).
- 28: Israel bombed 40 tunnels on the border between Egypt and Ghaza.
- Egypt closed the Rafah border terminal after the Palestinians had tried to force the border.
- 29: Israel engaged in an « all out war» against Hamas, declares the border area of Palestinian territory « closed military zone ».
JANUARY 2009
- 1: Raids against Hamas ministries, a Parliament building. A Hamas leader, Nizar Rayan, is killed.
- More than 40 rockets fired at southern Israel.
- 3: The Zionist troops enter Palestinian territory. Tanks opened fire on positions of Hamas, wiping firing of mortar shells. Hamas threatens to turn Ghaza into « graveyard » for the Israeli army.
- 4: Advanced Israeli troops, backed by artillery and air bombardments. The tanks took control of several strategic areas, it clashes with Hamas fighters.
- 5: The ground forces continued their advance, supported by naval bombardment. Fighting on the ground at Ghaza city.
- 6: Dozens of civilians are killed, including some fifty people in a school of the United Nations affected by the strikes. Firing of rockets into southern Israel, includin gone at more than 45 km.
- Egypt is proposing a plan to end the crisis developed with France.
- 8: The UN called for a cease-fire, lasting and fully implemented, leading to full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Ghaza.
- 11: Start of the deployment of Israeli reinforcements reservists.
- 13: Israeli special forces advanced several hundred meters in certain areas of Ghaza city.
- Israel is seeking to destroy » the Palestinian people (Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas).
- 14: Violent fighting in the suburbs of Ghaza city. 14 rockets fired at southern Israel and three from Lebanon in northern Israel, who responded.
- 15: The Israeli army intensified its bombing, killing a senior figure of Hamas, Said Siam, in Ghaza. The bombing affect a complex of the United Nations (UNRWA), a press building and a hospital ravaged by fire. Israel accused of violating international law in the UN General Assembly.
- 16: Israeli tanks withdrew from the districts of Ghaza and redeploy to the outskirts of Ghaza.
- Khaled Mechaal declared at Doha the rejection by the movement of Israeli conditions for a cease-fire.
- In Doha, Mauritania and Qatar decided to suspend their relations with Israel (Mauritanian delegation).
According to the UN, one million people in the Ghaza strip live without electricity, 750,000 are without water and hospitals are run by emergency generators.
At least 1145 Palestinians were killed, including 355 children, and more than 5160 injured (emergency services). According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights in Ghaza, 65% of the dead are civilians.
Ten soldiers and three Israeli civilians were killed.
