Egypt closed the Rafah terminal, on Sunday, at its border with the Ghaza Strip for fear of new Israeli bombings against smuggling tunnels, according to the security services.

  •     The Egyptian authorities « have brought the wounded Palestinian and ambulances out the terminal after reports that there could be Israeli bombardment on the Palestinian side of the border, told AFP an official of the services under cover of anonymity.

One of the main objectives of the Israeli operation (hardened Lead), which had lasted 22 days and had made more than 1,300 Palestinian Martyrs, was to stop smuggling of weapons from the Palestinian side of Rafah and the Egyptian Sinaï via tunnels.

The Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, warned that Israel reserved the right to strike again tunnels dug under the 14 km from the Line of Philadelphia, on the border between Egypt and Ghaza.

The tunnels are used, according to Israel, to move weapons into Ghaza, including rocket attacks against the south of Israel, but also for food and medicines to circumvent the blockade imposed by Israel in Palestinian territory since Hamas has won the election in June 2007.
