French, Italian, Swiss and Spanish companies pay millions to get secret information on Algeria’s major markets. The success of China in project implementation caused a shock in Europe. Chinese companies have fallen into scammers’ traps

  • The presence of Chinese enterprises in Algeria dates back to the eighties, when the first ones settled timidly while they accessed to projects in the framework of economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Chinese have won the confidence of Algerian officials after the implementation of basic and major tourist projects which have strengthened their position in the economic recovery program five years ago, after marking their presence in the midst of the crisis of the eighties. Period, during which the Europeans, particularly French, had left the country.

Che Jong Mi, Administration Director at West Asia and Africa, under the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, in her statement to the Chinese press agency, said "The cooperation between Algeria and China in some projects began in 1980 and encompassed various fields such as construction of roads, buildings, railways, communications and others.

Ms. Jong added that "This has strengthened the presence of Chinese companies in Algeria, successful projects that they have achieved like Club des Pins, Hilton Hotel, Sheraton Hotel, which have qualified Chinese companies to win more markets as the International Airport and the new headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this in addition to other important projects such as building dams, the ADL housing program and much of the big project the East-West Highway which is considered the largest project in which Chinese companies have invested outside their country.

Algerian-Chinese cooperation in the nuclear field is one of the largest projects realized within the framework of cooperation agreements, while in this field contracts with France or the United States have remained on paper.

The presence of Chinese companies in Algeria has been reinforced after the signing of strategic cooperation contracts between the two countries in November 2006, which gave an impetus to economic and trade exchanges between the two countries. Currently, over 40 large and medium Chinese companies activate in Algeria in the field of housing, telecommunications, energy and hydraulics. In July 2008, the overall cost of projects by Chinese companies in Algeria has reached 18.88 billion dollars. The Chinese labour in Algeria is about 30,000 employees.

Algerians have a long memory. During its latest Civil War (lets call it for what it is) while the Algerians was screaming "Help us", China was one of the few countries that had the wisdom to stick by the Algerian Government and take the long view. Only when Terrorism struck Europe and the US, did Algeria finally got some help. So much for quarterly thinking.
