Moscow bought back 24 Russian fighter jets to Algeria
The Russian Ministry of Defense has decided to buy back to Algeria 24 MiG-29 it had ordered in 2006, announced Monday the Russian vice-Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, Algiers refused them because of an inferior quality, according to the Russian press.
- "The question of buying back fighter planes ordered in Russia under a contract by Algeria has been settled for a sum of 25 billion roubles (535 million euros)," said Ivanov, quoted by Russian agencies.
"It's about 24 aircraft, not including those used for training exercises," he added.
Mr. Ivanov did not specify the reasons for the takeover, according to Russian agencies.
The Russian daily Kommersant said a year ago that Algeria would return back the Russian fighter MiG-29 delivered in 2006-2007, because of their inferior quality to expectations.
Algeria had signed in March 2006 a contract for the purchase of Russian military equipment, which included 34 MiG-29 for a total amount of 1.28 billion dollars (987 million euros), part of which has already been delivered.
