Mediterranean: Franco-Algerian surveillance and security exercise
TOULON (France) - A bilateral exercise of surveillance and maritime security in the western Mediterranean, involving French and Algerian naval forces, began Tuesday in Toulon, in south-eastern France, and ends March 19 in Algiers.
- Called "Rais Hamidou 10", named after the last of the great leaders of the Algerian navy of the Ottoman period, this exercise is part of the agreement on cooperation and friendship in the field of defense, signed on 21 June 2008 between Algeria and France.
It aims to strengthen the operational cooperation between the Algerian Navy and the French Navy in the areas of surveillance and maritime safety. The objective is to develop interoperability between the units and the sharing of experiences and knowledge in crisis situations such as pollution, loss at sea or smuggling.
The first phase of this maneuver will be held dockside at Toulon until 9 March and is intended to prepare activities in the sea. An operation of air-sea search, interception and rescue will take place then in the Algerian coast.
In this exercise, France initiated the surveillance frigate Germinal, a Lynx helicopter and maritime patrol aircraft Atlantique 2. For its part, Algeria has mobilized the LHA Kalaat Ben Rached, a missile corvette, two coastguard boats, a rescue vessel and a ship plastron.
