ALGIERS - Practitioners of public health in Algeria affiliated to two major independent trade unions announced Saturday in Algiers they were taking back their strike which began several weeks ago because of "lack of progress" in meeting their demands.

  •    "Despite the resumption of dialogue (with the Ministry of Health), no concrete progress is recorded on the support of our demands," said Dr. Mohamed Yousfi, president of the National Union of Public Health Specialists Practitioners (SNPSSP) at a press conference.
The demands include revision of the special status enacted in late 2009, the opening of discussions on the benefits system or the granting of a quota of staff flats, "a system already used for other categories of staff, according to Dr. Yousfi.
"We are determined to carry on," said union president of National practitioners of public health (SNPSP), Dr. Lyès Merabet.
Both announced Wednesday for a gathering of physicians, dentists and pharmacists generalists or specialists "before the Presidency of the Republic" in Algiers and in front of the seats of wilayas (department) in several regions of the country such as Constantine and Annaba (East) Oran (West) and Ouargla (South).
Both unions were invited to meetings under the umbrella of their ministry from February 18, then had suspended their rallies every Wednesday. Since then, "we do not see any results," said Dr Yousfi.
Adherents of SNPSP and SNPSSP, which include one other generalists to specialists, are on strike since the turn of the year, but provide emergency, monitoring chronically ill or guards at public hospitals.
Health sector employs some 30,000 doctors, including 8500 specialists, according to these unions.
