Education: End of a teachers’ strike deemed "illegal"

ALGIERS - Classes resumed after the decision of two independent teacher unions to end a strike that began February 24 and considered "illegal" by a court in Algiers, said Wednesday union sources.

  •    The autonomous National Council of Teachers of the Secondary and Technical Education (Cnapest) has decided to resume classes in particular because of "pressures" of the Ministry of Education, said the union.
The National Union of education and training staff (UNPEF), another organization part in the conflict, had also decided to resume classes on Monday by suspending the strike "under the court ruling" declaring "illegal," said a statement.
The two unions had begun their movement February 24 to demand to be particularly associated with the management of social work in this sector and to open negotiations on occupational medicine.
Relying on a court verdict on March 3 declaring the strike "illegal" and demanding the immediate resumption of work, the Education Minister Boubekeur Benbouzid then referred to the possible suspension from the public service of any teacher pursuing the strike.
He stressed "the need to end the strike, calling it" adequate "or" consistent " recent wage increases granted to teachers.
These increases were obtained after a previous strike observed by several independent unions, including Cnapest and UNPEF, who then led the new movement alone.
The union "who refuses to comply with the court and returning to work (...) will be sued on behalf of the Government for a final dissolution," warned the department.
The UNPEF assured having ignored these threats while deciding to end the strike.
