Public health personnel renew their strike
ALGIERS - The two main autonomous unions of practitioners of public health in Algeria announced Saturday the continuation of the strike they roll over every week for over two months for social and professional demands.
- "The strike will continue until solutions are found to our demands. We guarantee a minimum service," said Dr. Mohamed Yousfi, president of the National Union of specialist practitioners of public health (SNPSSP) at a press conference in Algiers.
The claims of those doctors, dentists and pharmacists are on the revision of the special status enacted in late 2009, the opening of discussions on the benefits system or the granting of a quota of staff housing, according to the two unions.
Representatives of the two unions, the SNPSSP and the SNPSP (National Union of practitioners of public health), were received Wednesday in El Mouradia, seat of the Presidency of the Republic, following a gathering of their members.
"We reiterate our call to President (Abdelaziz Bouteflika) so that solutions be found to our demands," said the leader of SNPSP Dr. Lyès Merabet.
Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said Friday during a press conference that "a special status is not a bespoke suit, it must meet the standards set by law."
"We do not request a bespoke suit, but the satisfaction of our social and professional demands," said Dr. Yousfi.
Ouyahia had also asked: "Is this a union claim to strike for three months while many of them (doctors, editor's note) are treating elsewhere?".
"Let us stop hypocrisy. The voice of anarchic protest is still heard but we are ashamed to recognize the voice of truth," added Prime Minister.
"I wish to strongly condemn the remarks of Mr. Ouyahia. This means he does not know our record," said Dr. Yousfi.
Health service employs some 30,000 doctors, including 8500 specialists, according to these unions.
