ALGIERS - Algeria will host on Tuesday a ministerial conference of countries of the Sahel-Saharan Africa on "the resurgence of terrorism", said Saturday the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  •    Foreign Ministers of Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad will take part in this meeting, the source said.
The conference will focus on "an assessment of the situation in the region, particularly in terms of the resurgence of terrorist acts and the threat of desertification and its connections with transnational organized crime and trafficking of all kinds, peace, security and stability in the region" the ministry said in a statement quoted by the Algerian APS agency.
The conference will enable participating countries to "consider and adopt measures, both bilaterally and regionally, to eradicate this scourge as well as ways and means to relaunch economic development to benefit the people of this region."
The Sahel region has known for some years an increasing activities of Islamic groups who claim Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
These groups maintain some pressure on the Algerian security forces regularly targeted by attacks in parts of country.
Several foreigners have been kidnapped or held in Mali and Niger in recent months, actions claimed by AQIM.
A Spanish hostage, Alicia Gamez, was released March 10 by a group of AQIM but four Europeans, two of her countrymen and two Italians are still being held in northern Mali.
The Sahel region is also subject of trafficking and smuggling of all kinds by groups within organized crime, regularly denounces Algiers.
