Israel plans to repatriate 10,000 Jews of Algeria
A member of the Knesset: the properties of Jews in Algeria amounted to over 2 billion dollars. Some occupy important positions.
- Members of the Israeli Knesset will study tomorrow morning at an open session, the case of Algerians of Jewish origin whose majority is living in European countries.
N. M. Shlomo, of Kadima party, who proposed repatriation of Algerian Jews, in a statement to Israel Radio before yesterday, said that the repatriation of Ethiopian Falasha will affect in the coming years many African countries where many Jews live, considering their repatriation to Israel as a sacred duty, adding that Israel must expand settlement projects and the construction of new settlements to accommodate new arrivals in order to strengthen Israeli Jewish society and reclaim their property from these countries.
The Member of the Knesset has cited in his speech, the Algerian Jews whom he estimated at 10,000. Many of them still practice their customs and traditions and Jewish religion hiding for fear of reprisals from the Algerians, particularly the Algerian regime who banned, he said, these practices to Jews as they are a minority. The Algerian Jews, according to the member of the Knesset, represent a political force in the country, many occupy senior positions in the state but find it difficult to convince the Algerians to build relationships, even partial, with Israel, like some countries that currently contribute to in attempting conclusion of peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, headed by Egypt.
According to the Israeli Knesset member, the properties belonging to Jews in Algeria amounted to over two billion dollars. He added that it would be easy to press the Algerian government to make him change his position vis-à-vis Israel.
To a question regarding the method and means to repatriate Algerian Jews, to what he called their country of origin, he replied that the Knesset that will meet tomorrow, will present several proposals that Netanyahu will take very seriously. He added that the Algerian Jews are in constant contact, directly and indirectly with Israeli government officials, citing the Algerians resident in France, Spain and Germany who have direct relationships with Israeli embassies in those countries and contribute with their money their resources and devote their time to support Jewish organizations active in social and cultural fields and publish their writings and research under pseudonyms to avoid persecution by the Algerian regime.
Statements in this Israeli official must lead to a movement control of members of the Algerian community abroad who may succumb to treason and espionage and even join the ranks of terrorist groups that are manipulated by Israel, and which represent a threat to the stability of Arab countries.
