Terrorism: 7 countries to consult in Algiers on security in the Sahel
ALGIERS - A conference between seven African countries opened Tuesday in Algiers, demonstrating the importance of issues of "security, peace and development" in the Sahel-Saharan Africa suffering from "terrorism", according to Chief Algerian diplomacy.
- "Our meeting reflects our awareness that (...) security and peace is a prerequisite for development" of the Sahel-Saharan Africa and "that terrorism and its alliances with organized crime are real threats," Mourad Medelci said at the opening of this "coordination conference" involving Chad, Libya, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Mali.
"It also reveals our common desire to make concerted responses appropriate and adapted to these challenges" and "it behooves us to first assess the terrorist threat that knows dangerous developments," he added.
Mr. Medelci denounced the "numerous terrorist connections with organized crime", citing drug and weapons trafficking.
"the establishment of effective cooperation and multifaceted border between our countries is crucial," said the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The foreign ministers or their representatives of seven countries then began their work behind closed doors.
The Sahel region has known for some years increasing activities of traffickers and smugglers of all kinds but also of groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) who claimed such kidnappings of foreigners. - Ennaharonline/ M. O.
