Countries of the Sahel to pursue fight against Salafiste group in the region
Algiers- representatives from seven African countries have condemned "unequivocally" on Tuesday in Algiers hostage-taking and ransom payments to "terrorist entities" operating in the Sahel-Saharan Africa, where they said they were "determined" to "eradicate terrorism."
- "We have unequivocally condemned the payment of ransom and hostage taking, and we recalled the obligation of each State to fully implement UN resolutions on this matter," said the Algerian Minister Delegate in charge of Maghreb and African Abdelkader Messahel after a conference gathering Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libya, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
The foreign ministers or their representatives, of the seven countries have reiterated their "strong condemnation of terrorism" and "(...) determination to eradicate this phenomenon" to "restore the Sahel-Saharan trade vocation, peace, stability and fruitful cooperation, "the statement added.
They recalled that during this meeting the prevention and fight against terrorism and its connections "with organized crime must make" a coordinated and integrated approach, and solidarity "between states, said the final communiqué. The text emphasizes the "responsibility of each State to conduct an effective fight against terrorism and the need for" enhanced cooperation "bilateral and regional" structured, and exclusively in good faith."
This cooperation is "the indispensable framework for a coordinated, effective, total and uncompromising against terrorism and its connections" that are "cross-border banditry, trafficking in weapons, drugs and human beings", they said.
Algiers meeting also stressed the "importance" of the organization "as soon as possible in Bamako the Conference of Heads of State on peace, security and development in the Sahel-Saharan region, which has been postponed several times in recent months.
It finally recalled "the interdependence between peace, security and socio-economic," "the importance of achieving sustainable development programs to improve living conditions of people" and need to support "structuring of large projects with a regional vocation ".
The Sahel region knows for some years increasing activities of traffickers and smugglers of all kinds but also of groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
