According to official statistics based on a survey carried by the National Gendarmerie, suicide takes alarming propensity in Algeria in recent years. The causes of this phenomenon are related to different social and family problems, in addition to unemployment. These people most often commit suicide by hanging. 70% chose this method; the others use poison or use firearms and knives or throw themselves from roofs of buildings, bridges and even from trains.

  • The services of the national police recorded 388 suicides between 2006 and 2008. The age varies between 18 and 40 and the majority of them were illiterate. Statistics show that people who commit suicide are mostly illiterate, among 3709 cases of suicide over the ten past years, 2967 were illiterate, i.e. 80%. The remaining 20% have a primary, intermediate, secondary or university level, including the largest number of suicides occurring during the examination period.

    In 2008, the gendarmerie services have registered 143 cases including 112 men while the number of suicide attempts has reached 186 cases including 127 women. In 2006, there were 117 suicides and 109 suicide attempts. In 2007, the suicide rate rose to 128 cases of which 107 were men and 128 suicide attempts.

  • Age, according to this study varies between 18 and 20. In 2007, there were the suicides of 16 young people aged under 18.

    According to the study conducted by the National Gendarmerie on 12 cases who were aged under 18, these latter would have committed suicide because of problems they had not been able to support.

    Bejaia ranks first in terms of suicide. 18 cases were registered in 2008, followed by the Medea with 12 cases.

    The social and family problems are the leading causes of suicide. 16 cases registered in 2007 due to pressures and family conflicts. The psychological and nervous troubles come in second rank with 25 cases in 2007. Despair and lost of all hope in life in addition to other problems come in third and last place with 69 cases.

    The young Hechani M.; aged 29, killed himself the day before yesterday evening by hanging, using a TV cable in the home of his brother in the town of El Hadjeb in.     The remoteness from the religion’s precepts is the cause of suicide.

    According to Meftah Cheddadi, Imam of the “El Kaouthar” mosque in Blida, suicide is seen as the destruction of what God has created. The human body is a creation of God that human beings must protect. He added that suicide is a crime that is committed only by the weak (weak in terms of religious concepts). "Do not despair of God except the wicked."
    Man must learn to use patience and accept the disease, poverty and problems of life.
    According to Imam, the reasons that lead to suicide are linked to lack of knowledge and religious education in the family and at school. The mosque also has a role to play.
