Loss of a Kalashnikov and six Beretta since last year in Annaba
Algiers- The province of Annaba held during the years 2009 and 2010 a record in terms of losses of firearms by police officers. These figures mean that the province ranks first among the other provinces that have recorded losses of firearms by police officers.
- The most significant event occurred in the province has been that in the Jewish cemetery in early 2009 when a machine gun was stolen from a vehicle belonging to the Mobile Brigade of the Judicial Police of Berahal. The theft was committed when three officers of the brigade were taking their lunch in a restaurant in the neighbourhood. The services of the police had then arrested the owner of the restaurant, suspected of being involved in the theft, and a police inspector and two policemen were dismissed.
- The same area recorded a month later, the loss of a Beretta by a police officer working in the security in the province of Guelma. The latter had lost it, in the mosque Bouzerar Hocine and the same scenario repeated in the mosque of Reffas Zehouane neighbourhood . Not far from the plac of the first incident, a woman police officer under the Fourth Urban Security has been attacked in early 2009 by a group of thugs, while returning home in Boutiah Salah neighbourhood. The attackers took her weapons and professional card, which were returned within hours.
- The year 2010 saw almost the same number of cases of loss of firearms. The province of Annaba recorded the loss of three different sizes of PA, two Beretta 15 mm and 9 mm.
- According to corroborating security sources the two 15 mm Berettas belonged to two police officers of the province security of Biskra and Tebessa and this during the current year. The services of the police have opened an investigation into both cases. The PA, owned by a woman police officer at the security of the district of El Hajar, who was lost last Thursday while she was visiting family in the area of Boukhadra in the municipality of El Bouni is under investigation.
- According to reports, the woman has been called two days ago by the judge at the court of El Hajar.
- According to statistics, the province of Annaba has seen these last years an increasing number of losses of firearms and police officers are most exposed to this kind of phenomenon, while that the gendarmerie showed only one cases since 2007, when a policeman, drunk, lost his weapon.
