Exchange of Algerian H1N1 vaccine stock against children vaccines
Algiers- Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform, Djamel Ould Abbes, on Sunday urged the exchange of the Algerian H1N1 influenza vaccine stock, 4.5 million doses of vaccines against children vaccines.
- GSK laboratory (Glaxo Smith Kline), a provider of H1N1 vaccine to Algeria, has proposed exchanging the stock of 4.5 million doses of this vaccine, which expires March 31, 2011, against the Cancer vaccine of the cervix. Ould Abbes, who received a delegation of the laboratory declined the vaccine for cervical cancer of the uterus, given the controversy surrounding its effectiveness, expressing the preference of Algerian health authorities for vaccines for children .
The birth rate in Algeria is growing, resulting in increased child drug needs," he said. "We went from 630,000 to 840,000 births per year between 2008 and 2010," he said.
The Minister said on the sidelines of the meeting that a stockpile of 537,000 doses of vaccine of H1N1 virus, expiring October 31, 2010 will be destroyed.
GSK laboratory is present in Algeria since July 2005 with a operational production in Boudouaou whose turnover amounted to 100 Million dollars.
