516 earthquakes recorded in the Mediterranean countries in two weeks
Algiers- The center of Euro-Mediterranean seismic watch has recorded not less than 516 earthquakes of several medium-sized in different Mediterranean countries last week.
- According to the center, this seismic activity was recorded recently in the Mediterranean, especially in Italy, Turkey, Greece, France and Spain and North Africa, including Algeria and Tunisia.
- Studies by the same center for the period from October 16 to 26 showed that the current Mediterranean region is experiencing some stability after a shock wave between 2 and 6 degrees on the Richter scale and with an average of 50 shocks daily. This important seismic activity is due to tectonic plate movements in Africa and Europe that are getting closer 1.3 cm per year, depending on previous scientific research.
- Although the majority of earthquakes recorded in recent times were not very strong, not exceeding 5 degrees on the Richter scale (18 earthquakes of 5 degrees against 35 of 4 out of a total of 516 earthquakes) , the most important hit Iceland yesterday with 4.8, and that of Greece and northern Iran respectively on 17 and 22 of the current month with 4.7 degrees, the center of seismic recorded a single which topped the usual standard, it was the most violent which occurred between 16 and 26 October in Indonesia on the 25th of this month at 10 pm with 7.7 degrees on the Richter scale.
- According to the center’s report, seismic activity was stable the last three days in Indonesia which had also recorded two earthquakes of six degrees in the same region. Note that 12 tremors of a total of 18 of 5 degrees or more were recorded in Indonesia. According to the report, Turkey is the country most affected in the same period with 100 shocks, followed by Greece 85, Italy 83 and to a lesser degree Portugal, Iceland, Austria, Iran, Romania, France and Spain.
