Paramedics on strike despite the Minister’s promises
ALGIERS - The paramedics on Tuesday began an "unlimited" strike in Algeria, consisting of occasional stops of working to support their claims, said the Union of Algerian Paramedic (SAP).
- Work stoppages of about 100,000 members have "started and lasted half an hour to an hour in each department or clinic and will continue until demands are met," told Secretary General of SAP Lounès Ghachi the AFP by telephone.
- The paramedics, who had already served a two-day strike on 1 and 2 February, followed by almost 90% according to the union, demand included the enactment of its special status, providing for a pay rise. They also want the rehabilitation of six colleagues "suspended for being union members," says Ghachi.
- Discussions took place Sunday between SAP and the Ministry of Health. Minister Djamel Ould Abbes said Monday that "concerns" of paramedics had been "officially supported".
- Mr. Ghachi said Tuesday that he does "not believe the Minister and that the SAP wanted written commitments."
- Algeria has 300 general hospitals, 14 university hospitals (CHU) and 1,200 polyclinics.
