Obama congratulates Algiers for the lifting of emergency rule

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama "welcomes" the Algerian government Thursday after the lifting of the state of emergency declared 19 years ago and hopes that this omen of changes which responds to the aspirations of the Algerian people, said the White House.

  •    "I congratulate the Algerian government for taking an important step today by officially lifting the state of emergency," Obama said in a statement from the White House.
  •    "This is a positive sign that the Algerian government listens to the concerns and the aspirations of its people and we look forward to seeing the next steps will be taken to allow Algerians to fully exercise their universal rights, including freedom of expression and association," the U.S. president.
  •    The United States will continue to cooperate with Algeria in this regard, says Mr. Obama.
  •    The decree means the lifting of emergency rule, dated 23 February, was published online in the Official Gazette on Thursday. It throws a measure introduced February 9, 1992 to fight against Terrorism.
  •    Despite this measure, the opposition said it remained determined to lead a new event Saturday for a regime change.
