Multi-services cabins on the Highway
Algiers- These are youth of about twenty who occupy cabins and tents they erected along the highway in its part joining provinces of western Algeria to sell food and drinks. Yassine, Majid, Abdelkader and others are now part of the scene. They earn their living and feed their families by selling sandwiches and other food products.
- We went out to meet these young people who watch their customers in the segment of the east-west highway, linking the western provinces of the countries. On the highway section at Bourached, we discovered fast-food shacks built on the edge of the road. Life is not easy for those citizens who live within a few meters from the highway.
- Several stalls selling sandwiches, poached eggs, and M'hadjeb (traditional sandwiches) in addition to soft drinks, and cheese of unknown origin or expiration date.
- Seeing us, Mohamed Lamine, a salesman, said he would run away, believing we were Supervisors. Mohamed Lamine works to feed his family after he had left school very young. "I have 5 brothers and sisters and I am the only one working to feed the whole family," he says sadly. This highway was a great help. Before, we worked one month each year, selling watermelons and melons. Today you can sell anything you want day or night.
- The only problems we face, says Mohamed Lamine, is the attacks at night by thugs.
