Gaid Salah in Mali to attend a meeting of four countries of the Sahel

ALGIERS - The Chief of Staff of the Algerian army, General Ahmed Gaid Salah will perform from Thursday an official visit to Mali to attend a special meeting of the joint command of the armies of four countries of the Sahel, announced official source in Algiers.

  •    This visit comes within the framework of "cooperation and continuous coordination" between the Sahelian countries, members of Staff Joint Operations (Algeria, Mali, Mauritania, Niger), said a statement of the Algerian ministry Defence.
  •    It operates in the context of holding an extraordinary meeting of council of chiefs of staff in these countries, dedicated to examining the current situation in the sub-region, the ministry said.
  •    During this meeting, the heads of the armies of four countries must also undertake a "comprehensive assessment of activities and actions implemented, to strengthen cooperation, coordination and cooperation" to address common challenges in fight against terrorism and organized crime," the source added.
  •    This joint committee between Algeria, Mali, Niger and Mauritania had been put in place after a series of meetings between the Chiefs of Staff of seven Sahelian countries (Algeria, Mali, Niger Mauritania, Libya, Chad, and Burkina Faso) and their foreign ministers.
  •    The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the four countries had already met in September in Tamanrasset (southern Algeria) where they had expressed their common determination to strengthen the fight against Al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
