King Mohammed VI for "new momentum" with Algeria
RABAT - King Mohammed VI of Morocco said on Tuesday "determined" to overcome the cyclical obstacles with Algeria, in a world "that leaves no room for weak entities."
- In a message to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on the occasion of the independence of his country, Moroccan king has reaffirmed his determination to pursue the action, "together with you to overcome the barriers" between the two neighbouring countries.
- The King also added that this cooperation should take place "as part of our Maghreb Union as a strategic option in a world dominated by strong groups, which leaves no room for weak entities".
- In recent months, Rabat and Algiers have exchanged visits of ministers who had the evidence points to a warming of political relations, long frustrated by the still unresolved problem of Western Sahara.
- Rabat, which occupies the former Spanish colony since 1976, offers to the Sahrawi an autonomy under its sovereignty. The latter, represented by the Polisario Front, calls for a referendum that includes the possibility of independence with the support of Algiers.
