Repatriation of the Algerian salor freed by Somali hostage
Algiers-The Algerian sailor released last week by Somali pirates after almost ten months' detention was repatriated Saturday in a condition deemed "satisfactory", announced Monday the spokesman of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Amar Belani.
- "After his release by Somali pirates for humanitarian reasons, our compatriot Azzedine Toudja was repatriated to Algeria Saturday, October 15, 2011," said Mr. Belani, whose remarks were reported by the APS press agency. Mr. Toudja was released together with another Ukrainian sailor.
The Algerian embassies in Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Paris participated in the repatriation of the Algerian seafarers, said Belani.
"The released hostage was able to benefit, on his return to Algiers, from adequate medical and psychological care," he added.
These former hostages and 25 other crew members, including 16 Algerians and Ukrainians, of the Algerian flag vessel “MV Blida” were captured on 1 January by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.
The Algerian diplomatic network "remains fully mobilized to get the release as soon as possible" of the sixteen other Algerian sailors still held hostage by Somali pirates, Belani said.
