Sahel countries concerned about the proliferation of weapons from Libya

Algiers-The Sahel Saharan countries are very concerned about the proliferation of weapons from Libya. A concern shared by the United Kingdom, particularly about the danger that these weapons can represent, with the presence of the terrorist organization of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, (Aqim), and other extremist groups in many countries of the region.

  • General Robin Searby, an adviser to British PM for security issues in North Africa, who visited Algiers Wednesday, expressed his country's concern on this issue.
  •  "We are as much concerned as the Sahel countries, about the uncontrolled circulation of arms from Libya," which could fall into the hands of Al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, he said after a meeting of two days of the Algerian-British bilateral contact group of cooperation on the fight against terrorism and related security issues.
  •  "The proliferation of weapons threatens the stability of the entire region and we must act together to determine the origin of these weapons and destroy them. They are a danger both to Libya and the neighboring countries," Mr. Searby added.
  • Part of the stock of weapons of ex-Libyan leader, looted by the rebels, may already be in the hands of the Darfur rebels, members of al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (Aqim), and other armed extremists, UN officials had warned after the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
