Deadly earthquakes in the Mediterranean

- Reminder of major deadly earthquakes which hit the Mediterranean over the past twenty years, after the one that occurred Monday in central Italy involving 92 deaths and 1,500 injured.

  •     The earthquake of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo, struck an area of Italy of high seismic activity in a Mediterranean region prone to large tectonic movements.
        
        - 13 December 1990: ITALY - An earthquake strikes Sicily, between Catania and Ragusa: 17 dead and 200 wounded.
        
        - 13 March 1992: TURKEY - 653 dead and 700 injured in an earthquake in the east.
        
        - 12 October 1992: Egypt - 552 killed in the region of Cairo.
        
        - 18 August 1994: ALGERIA - 172 dead and 288 wounded in the region of Mascara (west).
        
        - 15 June 1995: GREECE - 26 deaths in the region of Aigion in northern Peloponnese.
        
        - 1st October 1995: TURKEY - The region of Dinar (West) is affected by an earthquake: 90 dead and 210 wounded.
        
        - 26 September and 3 October 1997: ITALY - Two earthquakes hit Umbria (center) and the Marches (center), making 12 dead, over 110 injured and 38,000 homeless. The earthquake devastated mountain villages and damaging historic buildings, including the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi.
        
        - 27 June 1998: TURKEY - At least 140 dead in an earthquake which shook the province of Adana (south) and several surrounding provinces.
        
        - 17 August 1999: TURKEY - Nearly 20,000 dead and about 45,000 injured in a violent earthquake that hit the north-west. Several deadly aftershocks follow.
        
        - 7 September 1999: GREECE - 143 dead in earthquake hits Athens and the region north of the capital.
        
        - 12 November 1999: TURKEY - Nearly 900 dead and 5,000 injured in an earthquake that devastated the north-west.
        
        - 22 December 1999: ALGERIA - 28 dead and 175 wounded in the northwest, especially in the region of Ain Temouchent.
        
        - February 3, 2002: Turkey - 44 dead and 318 wounded in the province of Afyon (west).
        
        - 31 October 2002: ITALY - 30 people, including 27 children, were killed and sixty injured in the village of San Giuliano di Puglia (Molise, center).
        
        - 1st May 2003: TURKEY - 176 dead, including 84 children, and over 500 injured in Bingol province (east).
        
        - 21 May 2003: ALGERIA - Nearly 2,300 dead and over 10,000 injured in an earthquake that strikes the departments of Algiers and Boumerdes (50 km east of Algiers).
        
        - 24 February 2004: MOROCCO - An earthquake made 628 dead and 926 wounded in Al Hoceima and its area (north-east).
        
        - 6 April 2009: ITALY - The center of Italy was struck by a violent earthquake, which made 92 confirmed dead, 1500 injured and more than 50,000 homeless.
