2.6 tonnes of cannabis seized in Ain Temouchent
A quantity of 2.6 tonnes of cannabis was seized in a boat near ...Sbiâât... beach in Ain Temouchent, 480 km west of Algiers, by the Algerian police, said Monday the gendarmerie.
- The drugs were concealed in packages bearing the words ‘KS2009’ according to a communiqué of the police quoted by the Algerian APS agency.
The police also discovered in the same boat food, bottled water, engine oil and life jackets, according to the release.
Seizures of cannabis, which have exceeded 20 tonnes since the beginning of the year could reach 60 tonnes at the end of 2009, according to Algerian authorities.
Over 38 tonnes of cannabis were seized in 2008 against four tons in 2007, according to official figures.
Algeria, which was a transit country for drugs, has now become a fixture of the drug, according to the Algerian gendarmerie.
