The American special envoy for the Middle East in Algeria
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika received Tuesday afternoon in Algiers the American special envoy for the Middle East George Mitchell.
- Arrived shortly before at the airport in Algiers where he was received by Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci, Mr. Mitchell went immediately to the presidency to meet Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika, elected on April 9 for a third term.
Mr. Mitchell was in Rabat, the first leg of his third trip to the Middle East including the Gulf countries. In Israel he will meet for the first time since taking office on 1 April, the new Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu.
Former U.S. Senator, whose mother is of Lebanese origin, was appointed special envoy for the Middle East by President Barack Obama.
Former negotiator in the peace process in Northern Ireland, Mr. Mitchell will promote two-state solution in the Middle East in which Mr. Obama spoke, said the State Department - Ennaharonline/ AFP
