The saying goes that turmeric, a yellow coloured spice, is almost like gold which is also yellow in colour. Both these yellow substances are valued for their priceless properties and the value they impart to mankind.

  • Turmeric, in particular, is known to possess several medicinal benefits. For example, when turmeric is mixed with milk, then it is works as a fairness cream to lighten the complexion of the skin. When it is applied to wounds, it works as a disinfectant and as a pain killer.

    Turmeric has been used in countries like India for centuries and is still in use today, countless households consume it on a daily basis as "haldi". In cooking, many Indians sprinkle it on vegetables like cauliflower. It infuses the vegetable with a delicious yellow tinge, as it has since the dawn of time. However, it is only now that new studies have revealed that a combination of turmeric and cauliflower actually prevents the growth of prostate cancer in humans.

    In a startling revelation, scientists have discovered that turmeric prevents leukaemia in children and more interestingly, it prevents Alzheimer's disease. Turmeric works by reducing the build-up of amyloyd plaque inside the brain.

    Caught a cold and your chest is congested? Boil some milk with turmeric and clarified butter (what is known as "ghee" in India) and gulp down this bitter concoction twice a day. After three days, you will notice that turmeric works as a gentle antihistamine, without any of the side effects associated with OTC (Over the Counter) drugs.

    Studies are in progress to use turmeric, and its extracts, in fat reduction and weight management. In China, however, turmeric has long been used to treat depression. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it is also used to treat arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Some skin problems like psoriasis are also known to be treated by turmeric.
